Battle of Yorktown
Siege at Yorktown (1781)
The last major battle of the American Revolutionary War. Led by General Washington, the General Marquis de Lafayette, and French troops and Navy, British forces under the command of General Charles Lord Cornwallis will surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, following an American and French siege that left British forces without supplies and reinforcements. The defeat will be a final blow to British hopes of subduing the rebellious colonies. |
Treaty of Paris (1783)
The Treaty of Paris, the treaty that ended the American Revolutionary War, was a triumph for the Americans. Great Britain recognized the United States as an independent nation. The territory that the new nation claimed extended from the Atlantic Ocean west to the Mississippi River and from Canada in the north to Spanish Florida in the south. The British recognized American independence and agreed to withdraw all their troops from American territory. They also agreed to give Americans the right to fish in the waters off the coast of Canada.
